There are specific security challenges that typically emerge in the context of team-based distributed investigative work. Through a small number of case studies from recent years, in this session we will present common pitfalls of collaborative work, identify strengths and weaknesses of different approaches, and introduce tools and best-practices that might help increase your team's security and productivity. The session requires some prior knowledge of data security.
• Cloud-storage and file-sharing, popular commercial solutions, open-source and self-hostable alternatives, Nextcloud, OnionShare
• Messaging and video-call systems, Signal and various alternatives
• Databases, collaborative tools for data cleaning, labelling, and analysis
• Tools for data visualisation
• Some more advanced topics (e.g. the Matrix protocol)
