You have probably used a web browser to navigate to a webpage already. But how does the web really work? Have you ever wondered how exactly your stories reach your readers? Ever wanted to know how to build a simple webpage? Or how to scrape information out of the web and onto your computer?

In this session we will cover the basics: the principles of how web pages get onto your screen, and then go hands-on learning the basics of the two key web technologies: HTML and CSS. These could be your first steps to learn to develop websites, but we'll also cover how what you've learnt can be used to start scraping information from the web.
Participants will gain a basic understanding of how the web works, the key technologies involved, and the principals of how this knowledge can be applied to scrape the web. Participants will leave with the necessary foundations to learn web development or web scraping.

Prior knowledge: To attend this session, no prior knowledge is required.

All the software necessary will be pre-installed on the school computers. Participants who want to join with own laptops need only a web browser such as Google Chrome, Firefox, Safari or Microsoft Edge.
